The client's property is situated in south central France about as far from the sea as you can get in that area of the country. We agreed that a little flavor of the seaside would refresh the place. Taking images of beaches and abstracting them (rollover image bottom) give a design that will be embossed into clay tiles. The embossed areas will be flooded with glaze creating a change of surface texture (bare clay to reflective glaze) as well as a strong graphic. The client was anxious to develop a relationship between the outside and the inside of the building and consequently the existing tile grid will be continued outside. The tiles were block molded allowing a deep impression and the glaze subsequently crazes and refracts the sunlight in an alluring way.
